Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game is a survival horror board game that pits small-town heroes head-to-head against a horde of zombies. A team of four heroes is chosen by one set of players, and the zombies are controlled by one or two players. Each hero has its own special abilities. The board is modular, which changes the layout of the town and start positions of each hero. The game comes with several scenarios, which include simple survival, rescue, or escape. Differing combinations of heroes, scenarios, and board configurations offer a lot of replayability. A hero deck and a zombie deck deliver tactical bonuses to each side. Combat is resolved using six-sided dice, modified by the weapon cards with which heroes may be equipped. Many of the cards include zombie movie tropes to achieve a feel of playing out a horror movie. All the game art is photographic, enhancing the cinematic feel. The game also comes with a CD soundtrack of original thematic music. Each hero has its own plastic sculpted miniature. The game also has 14 zombies in two colors. Other objects and effects are represented by high-quality cardboard counters.

The Survival of the Fittest expansion is packed with 3 all new card decks for Last Night on Earth, as well as new game mechanics, and several intense new Scenarios. The Heroic survivors of Woodinvale can now find powerful Unique Items to help them in their struggle as well as the use of Survival Tactics to keep them alive through the night. Not to be outdone, the relentless horde of Zombies now has access to a host of gruesome Grave Weapons that they can wield against the Heroes. These three new decks (Unique Items, Survival Tactics, and Grave Weapons) can be seamlessly integrated into all existing Scenarios using the same modular 'Dots' system first introduced in the Growing Hunger expansion. Survival of the Fittest also includes new cards for the main Hero and Zombie decks as well as additional full color counters to expand the LNOE toolbox. Last Night on Earth: Blood in the Forest sees the human heroes – fleeing, as always, from approaching hordes of zombies – fight their way deeper into the forested mountains. This expansion, which can be added to Last Night on Earth: Timber Peak or the original Last Night on Earth board game, features new forest game boards (four corners and four straight pieces), a new double-sided forest center board (with the Airfield), two new types of zombie figures – a pack of vicious feral zombies and the menacing zombie behemoths – to hunt down the heroes, two new heroes (Sister Ophelia, the reformed nun, and Agent Carter, an FBI agent who knows more about the outbreak than he lets on), as well as a host of new hero and zombie cards, counters, scenarios, and game mechanisms. Last Night on Earth: Blood in the Forest also expands on the Experience system originally introduced in LNOE: Timber Peak. As the zombie plague spreads, the forests will run red!

I've only played one game so far, as the Heroes, but I must say I'm impressed. They captured the theme very well, and the pacing seems just right. I need to play again and try playing the zombies side before I make up my mind but I think this one has legs. Bunches of zombies and six-sided dice and that works for me.
