After the fall of Rorius house, the king of Mysthea, in order to contain the power of the Volarees house, created a system of 5 guilds and assigned a specific role to each of them. Now, the guilds are fighting for the top step of the political scene. Set in the wonderful world of Mysthea, Volfyirion Guilds events take place immediately after the previous title: Volfyirion; and about sixty years before the events of Mysthea. The game retains all the features and mechanics from its predecessor, indeed it's a competitive and fast-paced deck-building card game for two players. At the same time, however, it adds more depth to the gameplay, thanks to 110 new cards, including new card types, abilities, and mechanics. In addition, the game has renewed the solo mode: now you can fight against Mysthea world epic creatures, each of which has its own features and rules. Volfyrion Guilds can be played as a standalone game or combined with the classic Volfyrion and this amplifies the alternatives for players. Bring to the table the inscrutable force of fate through a set collection mechanic. Make the Omen come true by collecting signs, sacrificing immediate gains to unravel treacherous powers. The Omen is a new type of card which comes along with its own several abilities. An Omen card allows you to beat your opponents by building a long term alternative strategy that could be a game changer, if deployed in the right moment. This kind of strategy is not costless, but it surely leads to huge rewards. The new Omen cards provide powerful effects that need specific set collections to trigger. The cards collected in this way are called Signs and can be added or removed during the game, offering new opportunities for direct interaction between players. Volfyirion Guilds - Omen Expansion is not a standalone game. It can be played either with Volfyirion, or Volfyirion Guilds in 1vs1 mode. Accomplish your Guild's hidden agenda through low blows and tricky interruptions during the opponent's turn that will increase the complexity and tension of the game. The Ploy is a new type of card which comes along with its own several abilities. A Ploy Card, with its asymmetric and secret new strategy, may allow you to beat your opponent, overwriting the rules of the game in specific conditions. The new Ploy cards provide alternative ways to interact with the opponent, even during their turn, to sabotage their strategies when needed. A Ploy card must remain face down until they are played, but Ploys can also be drawn, forcefully revealed, swapped, or removed by the effect of other abilities during the game. Volfyirion Guilds Ploy Expansion is not a standalone game. It can be played either with Volfyirion, or Volfyirion Guilds in 1vs1 mode. On the one hand, they are tremendous. The insert is fairly straightforward, and the bottom drawer is great. But on the other hand, we're talking about a small deckbuilder battler like Hero Realms or Radlands (I know... not deck building). Also, it annoys me that the big dragon mini doesn't fit into the box. There are some pros and cons to gameplay. On the plus side, it's pretty easy to teach and play. The modules are easy to integrate and add a nice bit of variety. I really don't consider them bloat too much, because the rules overhead is so light. For negatives, I think they are noteworthy because this is a very crowded genre so you're afforded the opportunity to be very picky. First is the tempo. You have this very slow build-up of better cards, tit for tat on Wonder cards, etc. Seems like nothing's going on with the cities and then all of the sudden it's the apocalypse and the game is over. The other issue is one that has been around since the original Volfyirion (which I also owned), and that is resource counting. It's been made vastly better by the tokens in terms of tracking, but now there's like a mini start to the main phase where you're counting and collecting tokens. It's a bit tedious quite frankly, but you can live with it. Ignoring timelines of what came out first, this game primarily reminds me of Omen, Hero/Star Realms, and Radlands. The main reasons to get this over the others is modules, but the shelf space is a serious concession. Although Hero/Star Realms is there too, so maybe that's just the future of these style of games.
