In Tales of the Arabian Nights, you are the hero or heroine in a story of adventure and wonder just like those told by Scheherazade to her spellbound sultan! You will travel the land seeking your own destiny and fortune. You will learn stories and gain wisdom to share with others. Will you be the first to fulfill your destiny? The next Tale is yours to tell! There is, of course, a winner in Tales of the Arabian Nights, but the point of the game is less to see who wins and more to enjoy the unfolding and telling of a great story! Players choose a character card, a quest, select a set skills, and move across the board to fulfill the quest. A player's movement is based on their wealth and each player draws an encounter card at the end of their move. Dice are thrown and these determine the player's responses to the encounter based on their character card. In a very simplified sense, it's a very big Choose Your Own Adventure game - with the added spice that the players to your right and left control the matrix and the Book of Tales during your encounter - so the game moves along at a good pace. The first player to finish their quest wins. The Book of Tales is huge and offers a huge amount of the variability and replayability. Solitaire modules can be purchased separately.

Tales of the Arabian Night is not a normal game. There are lots of random and uncontrolled elements and if players are only playing in order to win they'd better stay out of it. It's a unique experience a game among games. I've never played anything alike. The book of tales is superb! This rating has nothing to do with my willing to play the game but with the brilliancy of it. It's very difficult to make such a game with such interest. Playing the game could actually not be fun at all for some players. Some elements of the game can make the experience not that much interesting and kind of boring. Being imprisoned is not that fun nor is to be married! (U)

Haven't played this yet but, based on the reviews, I don't think I'm going to enjoy ToTAN as much as I originally anticipated. ToTAN looks akin to one of those kids games where you mix and match pictures of people or animals to come up with wacky combinations but the fun is limited to the rapidly decreasing novelty of making those combinations. At least Arkham Horror and Betrayal had game mechanisms in support of their game narrative. I really can't see me playing ToTAN without also using alcohol or other mind-altering drugs at the same time. ToTAN might have value as a family game for the occassional rainy day. Otherwise, I'd prefer to read a book or play an RPG on my computer.

Never had a chance to play the original game but a friend of mine always had good things to say about it. Now that Z-Man has it I know the game is a must buy for me.
