Have only played demo but a solid update to one of my favorite games: keeps what works and changes what didn't. I don't like the new art cause cartoons ruin my evocative narrative.

Original ...If there are 1 o more friendly citadel units on the battlefield...

With the Starter Set, Cloaks, Skyspear Avians, Fungal Dwarves, Eternal Council, Sand Goblins, Wayfaers, Mountain Vargath, the Forged, and Deepwood Groaks. I also have Khan Queso and the treacherous Blacksaber promos. 2/16/2024 I looked at this one for a while, but didn't like the feel of it from the videos. Then they changed the art and it looked like they made things a little more family friendly, which put it back into consideration. We like battle games in this house and 2 is a really good player count for these type of games. This one fits in well delivering satisfying gameplay in a decent amount of time. It is a well put together game. The cards are used really well here providing interesting events and combatants with all of their information for use visible on their cards which really aids in the ease of play. The board takes you through the steps for each turn, which is really nice for new and experienced players as it is easy to forget a step. The dice are good quality and there are a lot of hits on each. The tokens are nothing special but are very functional and I like having the "1" on one side and the "3" on the other for the damage and boost tokens. Hand management is key in this game. Do I keep this expensive champion for a potential later play, or do I discard it now to get magic for more immediate returns? Movement and attacking are straight forward with the decisions being who to move and who to attack with, as there are limits on both. Rules are easy to digest and remember. My favorite rule is the one about having to injure something on the other player's team every turn or your summoner loses life. This keeps things from bogging down. There is a lot of variety with the different decks available and coming in the future. The factions are different feeling without being too different. I never feel like I have to learn the game again to play a new faction. We will see how many of them I end up purchasing! The two promos I have we sometimes throw in to whatever deck we pick. I don't plan on deck constructing, though, so they are not essential, but we have fun with them.

Great Follow up to one of my favorite games of all time. As an excellent sequal it improves on all the faults of it's predecissor both mechanically and in material design/quality. With Excellent artwork by Martin Abel, there is a lot to love here. Expansions: Phoenix Elves v Tundra Orcs +Mercenary Promos
