Scholars of the South Tigris is set during the height of the Abbasid Caliphate, circa 830 AD. The Caliph has called upon the keenest minds to acquire scientific manuscripts from all over the known world. Players will need to increase their influence in the House of Wisdom, and hire skilled linguists to translate the foreign scrolls into Arabic. In this Golden Age of wisdom and knowledge, be mindful not to neglect one in pursuit of the other. The aim of Scholars of the South Tigris is to be the player with the most victory points (VP) at the game’s end. Points are gained by translating scrolls, increasing knowledge in various areas of science and mathematics, influencing the 3 guilds, and by retiring translators after their years of faithful service. The game end is triggered once all 4 caliph cards have been revealed. —description from the publisher

This is that Lacerta style of "simplicity." Someone might say "all you're doing is this or that; everything you do on your turn is on this playing card!" But the reality is there are a lot of interwoven gears here that require careful planning. I enjoy what you're accomplishing throughout the game. Resources are tight but not to a level of punishment that becomes oppressive. There is mitigation when needed, and so many "battlefronts" that you won't be able to do everything, which is good. It'll make you want to come back for more. One of my favorite parts is the Concordia-style card management system. In all games that use this, I really appreciate the tension of playing more cards or recalling them. There's no way this is a 60-90 minute game as the BGG page suggests, unless people are on a chess clock. There are so many interwoven elements to consider that I don't see how it's realistic. Playtime is probably my biggest barrier, as well as complexity. This is not a game that fits my style of playing each game in my collection once or twice a year, because this isn't a ruleset I'm going to remember all too well. Still, I'm probably always down to play this and appreciate that there is so much on offer from a regular-sized box.
