Arrakis: Dawn of the Fremen is a mix of Settlers of Catan / Scythe with trading, negotiation, and combat based on an older title called Borderlands by the same designers (Cosmic Encounter, Dune). Resources are produced in the individual territories. The resources can be traded with other players, or used to produce weapons and vehicles to take over territories. [b]I like:[/b] + Artwork. + Theme: prequel to Dune (no House Harkonnen or Atreides) + Kind of modular map: maps stays the same but you put blockade tokens randomly on the map to block passages. + Worms allows your units to travel further. + Combat: deterministic, temporary alliance building with other players. [b]Neutrals:[/b] # Very structured game with 7 phases. # You have to control three sieges to win the game or 5 sieges in an alliance. # Coucil phase: players negotiate alliances and new rules for the game (e .g., victory conditions). # Shipment phase: each player can move one item (units or resource) on the map. # Tight game with scarce resources. # Luck of the draw: scavage cards. # Generic factions. [b]I do not like:[/b] - Random resource generation depending on day / moon token and dice. No player aid for the production chart. - Many little rules. Game takes some time to get into. - Trading and Coucil offer negotiation, but it doesn't really always come through in the gameplay. - Little variation each game (low number of unit types).
